If I forget to fix the broken schedule link than please remind me.

Um, I hadn’t noticed the bug you mentioned above. I just look at each forum and see there’s no messages, I’ve never used the unread posts thingy. I’ll see what I can do, not promising anything though.

That’s covered in the description “General chatter about ice hockey in Dunedin”.

I was meaning that teams may dump the players after one game, or only need them for one game, nothing to do with committment. I guess that’s more of an issue for the main committee to work out at the time rather than a branding issue though.

I think people should be allowed to buy their own uniform, but that the club should have some available for those who don’t. After all, some players may only get to play the occasional game, so purchasing an $80+ jersey may not be an option. We ran into a similar problem with the Dunedin Aces and Otago University Inline Hockey Clubs when the committees decided to go down that route. But yeah, being able to buy your own uniform is definitely a major step forward. I’ve never understood why the club never offered them before, it’s a good way for the club to make money too.

The colours and branding need to be applied across a number of other things: the web site, letterhead, clothing, bags, hats, possibly other merchandise like badges and so forth. Also signs – at the rink, possibly on the side of a vehicle, etc. I think the whole thing needs to step back a bit from the hockey tops and think about wider things.[/quote:14vhp3rb]

That’s true, but the uniform is a fundamental stumbling block as there’s a limitation on which colours can be used and other branding issues will need to be tied in with that. That’s the reason for the focus on uniforms.

What are we trying to convey with our branding? Energy? Speed? Excitement? Skill? Power? These are the sorts of things that should come through the branding exercise. Perhaps the logo on the tops should indicate movement in some way? Or be a symbol of something that is fast, or strong. If we were to stick with the penguin, then alter it so it looks like a penguin with those attributes[/quote:14vhp3rb]

Yep, that’s why I like the Ice Blacks logo. It’s important to note here that (I think Steve will agree on this) that we’re not trying to come up with a logo design, just a concept. Once a basically outline of a concept is drawn up we can pass that on to others for the design work.

    Yep, I hate the D.

    [u:3eev3ar3][i:3eev3ar3]My own [b:3eev3ar3]personal[/b:3eev3ar3] view on things:[/i:3eev3ar3][/u:3eev3ar3]

We are the Dunedin Ice Hockey Association therefore any names should use Dunedin, not Otago.

I like the idea of a single team name across the board, this is the route used by most hockey clubs in New Zealand including Queenstown, all the Canterbury clubs and all the inline hockey clubs. Internal leagues such as the DIHL could and should still use different team names, but representative teams could be consistent. The problem of having multiple teams in the same grade can be dealt with, for example the Christchurch Dragons ice hockey club uses names such as Silver Dragons, White Dragons etc. for each team while still keeping the Dragons branding.

I’m not against the concept of having different team names though. This would require some lateral thinking for logo design however. The Ice Blacks logo is a good example IMO (see attachment below) of something which is ambigous enough to be suitable for any team, yet stylish and ‘hockey’ enough and ‘Kiwish’ enough to fit with their team. A similar style of logo could be designed for Dunedin.

If we were to use a name for our club, I prefer the option of sticking with the Penguins name, it represents Dunedin (yellow eyed penguins) and has a connection with ice hockey (ice).

I hate the current red, black and white colours, they make us look like we’re from Canterbury which is stupid. Yellow/gold and blue is out of the question as well as that represents Otago and it clashes very badly with Albury, the Southern Stampede and all the SIHL rep. teams.

I like the original Stampede colours, Black with orange and blue. I showed that colour scheme to our designer and she was very keen on it. It looks professional, it’s different from everything else (that I can think of) and it doesn’t clash with any other teams. Plus it’s vaguely Speights-ish which could be useful for future sponsorship. It’s also Otago-ish enough to connect with Dunedin, but not Otago-ish to make us look like we’re trying to represent Otago which we’re not (that’s the Southern Ice Hockey League’s job, not ours).

There is a distinct problem with the original Stampede colours though, as uniforms with that colour scheme may be quite expensive due to them not being standard off the shelf NHL colours which tend to be cheaper (made in bulk). However if the club were purchasing them en-mass then that may not be a problem. I like the orange with black arm bands design on slide/page 12 of Steve’s presentation, that design is (I think) a standard NHL design so would likely be cheaper.

A distinct issue I see with colours schemes which are already is use in the NHL is that those uniforms are used heavily by other teams/clubs for the simple reason that they’re cheaper and easier to access. But this inherently makes them common and less impressive to me. A unique design is far more attractive and looks more professional to me than a rip off NHL design.

    My two cents …

    Ryan,

    [b:2qvpd4ue]An important note:[/b:2qvpd4ue]
We have a professional designer who has volunteered her time to help design our logo and various other branding related things for the Dunedin Ice Hockey Association. So this isn’t going to be some half baked attempt here, we are aiming for a professional look for our teams and club and this branding will be carried over into many other aspects of the clubs activities.
