MemberCount me out of it. I’ve been pushing this issue for a while now and if my name is attached to it people may just assume it’s me being on another rant. A separate set of people pushing for the same thing will probably help a lot more.

That’ll work, leaves the posts there for those who feel like reading them but keeps them out of the way and doesn’t dilute the main discussion.
Racist, sexist or offensive in anyway posts are outta there though, they’re not appropriate no matter what title may go on them. I’ll just dump them into the website administration forum, or if they’re particularly bad I’ll delete them – I have boner for keeping this stuff for prosperity – http://www.dunedinicehockey.hellyer.kiwi/newsarchive/%5B/url:axqw2oi2%5D is another example.

MemberYep, promotion of this way of doing things is a good idea. I feel a little biased on this since I run the thing, so it would be handy if one of you guys approached the committee regarding it. An email to the secretary would do the job (secretary@dunedinicehockey.hellyer.kiwi).
I’m 100% for the concept of ALL hockey discussions and decisions being made online and only extreme situations requiring real meetings, ie: things which legally require it, like changes to constitution etc.
I’m also 100% for the concept of players who don’t use either email simply missing out on playing if they don’t get the information needed to play in time. The hassle of getting hold of people because they can’t/choose not to use a computer is not worth the effort IMO.
I think those ideas would go down like a lead balloon however <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/tongue.gif" alt="
” title=”Tongue” /> We essentially did that with the Dunedin Aces/University of Otago Inline Hockey Clubs, players who didn’t use email simply didn’t know what was going and when to turn up so they didn’t get to play. That was fairly easy as our player base was almost entirely made up of university students who are unlikely not to use a computer daily, the DIHA isn’t like that. Plus the senior members of the club would have kittens at the thought of them and their children being kicked out for not using email. In a perfect world however … or in Ryan’s world <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/smiley.gif" alt="

MemberOkay, so a second general forum is out, too much dilution.
I’m not sure a hidden forum will help either, as those who are posting the more ‘banterish’ posts will be the ones with access, so the dilution will occur the same.
Um, my only solution is to continue with things the way they are, moving Matt’s topics in here each time he posts them <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/tongue.gif" alt="
” title=”Tongue” /> A fair few people have access in here anyway. Not quite what I had in mind though as it’s not really curing the problem.

MemberOne more thing:
I’ve suggested to the DIHA committee members on occasion (via email) that they use the forum and told them about his admin forum (which was originally just for sorting hockey stuff) but none of them ever signed up until Phil, Paul and Graham joined.
There is a separate committee forum on here (as of the other day), but it’s essentially empty. Not much chatter going on in there. I’m leaving that to formal discussions, committee stuff and keeping those not involved with the nitty gritty of the club out. Of course there’s only a few organizers on this thing so that’s not surprising.

MemberGood ideas, two issues:
Some of the committee are, how shall we say, um, not particularly computer literate. It’s possible they will struggle to use the forum. I’ve already had one committee member tell me they wanted to post something but found it too difficult so gave up. They were able to view things though, they figured that much out.
The online contact detail system is already in place. I volunteered to administer it but gave up in frustration. Partially I gave up due to it just being too hard and not worth my effort and partially as I thought letting people know how difficult it was and that I’d given up because of it would alert them to the fact that there is a distinct problem. Mark Hareb has agreed to take over that job now thankfully although is suffering from similar problems to what I experienced – basically you can’t make a contact list when it turns out that no one collected them in the first place!?!? and the contacts which have been collected are not supplied to you <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/sad.gif" alt="
” title=”Sad” />
Oh yeah, I’m not sure that forcing team managers to use the forum will work. Some people just don’t go online, simple as that. I spoke to some players last week who were adament that they definitely do use email and that they do check it regularly (Garret Wilson), but when I probed him about how often he actually checked it, he said at least once every month or so!!! So some peoples definition of ‘being online’ is quite different from anyone in here who would likely find it odd not to check their email at least a few times per day. Anyhows, in a nutshell, not everyone uses the net, so expecting them to use a forum effectively is a bit of an ask. Of course, strongly suggesting that it’s a good idea is definitely a good idea. It’s much more effective than email because everyone can see it and there’s no possibility of information not being dispersed appropriately.
[i:8zs2nh7o]Off topic: I’m not sure I ever intended for the forum to be used for discussing anything really useful, I thought people would just use it for saying hi, or posting random shit like Matt does. Other forums I’d seen sports clubs use operated like that and rarely had any posts in them and I wasn’t expecting much more from this than that. Then Kyle seemed keen to use the admin forum for sorting DIHL shit out and then started posting his picks for the week and it just sort of ballooned from there <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/smiley.gif" alt="

MemberI’m not sure your solution quite fixes it Chris, as the type of posts we’re talking about here are quite reasonable for the average Joe Blogs hockey player to see. Just because someone has made 20+ posts doesn’t mean they want to hear someone being homophobic, that’s not acceptable, period. Anything which users get access to by default must have content suitable for a general audience, albeit it doesn’t need to be on topic. But an off-topic doesn’t need to be secret either, if it’s obviously labeled as something completely non-hockey related then it shouldn’t be a problem.
Any suggestions for a name for the new ‘potential’ forum?
Here are some ideas, not necessarily good ones:
[list:2lho8gqn]
[*:2lho8gqn]Random Junk – For off-topic non hockey related discussion[/*:m:2lho8gqn]
[*:2lho8gqn]General Ice Hockey Chatter [b:2lho8gqn]and[/b:2lho8gqn] General Non Hockey Chatter[/*:m:2lho8gqn]
[*:2lho8gqn]Random Chatter – For off-topic non hockey related discussion[/*:m:2lho8gqn][/list:u:2lho8gqn]I’m still not sure what to do here, although Kyle and Chris don’t seem to like the idea of another ‘open’ forum.
