Just supposing I was thinking about doing up that website you emailed me about the other day, what do you think of having a hard-coded main menu in the header linking to all the important parent pages, with an automatically generated list of all the pages on a sidebar? Is that too goofy?[/quote:i4agp57x]

I think there’s a plug in to let you set up a menu to put at the top, as well as a list of all of them in the sidebar. Or at least I think there is, that would be slightly more elegant I spose as you could edit it from the admin panel.

I also thought that sticking a login form, RSS feeds and a randomly selected photo in boxes along the bottom (footer) would be groovy, ’cause the standard two-column blog-style layout doesn’t really ring my bell.[/quote:i4agp57x]

There’s a gazillion ways to do these things so whatever floats your boat I spose. I don’t get why websites stick special RSS buttons on the page though, I just use the one in the address bar. Or perhaps that doesn’t work in some browsers?

I’ve installed the NextGen gallery plugin which seems to work quite well.

Here’s my test gallery which is quite barren at the moment. You can add new galleries on any page you want.

At a guess, I’d say the A-grade will be quite short on players this season. The Dunedin Premier Series will probably butcher player numbers I think.

Ryan – how about this for your user level problem?

Yeah I’ve got that. But that doesn’t allow you to limit access to certain pages, just the ability to edit all page or all posts or all pages and posts which the user created, not certain pages created by others but not ALL pages. Hopefully that made sense <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/tongue.gif" alt=":P” title=”Tongue” />

It can be better. I’m not happy with how this SMF thing is working out as CMS. It was a good idea but it hasn’t worked out so well. WordPress was my original plan but I couldn’t figure out how to make it do exactly what I wanted it to. But I’ve learned a lot since then and I’ve almost got it nutted out.

In particular there’s a problem with the current system as if I need to hand it over to someone else at some point – ie: I leave Dunedin/get sick of it/am too busy – then whoever takes it over will need to delve quite deep into the PHP side of things to make even quite small changes, like add a new section to a web page. If I can set it up with a ‘proper’ CMS, then that problem will be solved. It’s also a potential SEO nightmare as the category that the current pages are stored in the forum is visible to search engines which would get quite annoying if they linked to them instead of the main pages. Plus having duplicate content dilutes your effect on your search engine ranking.

The skills I learn by messing round with this site usually end up being used elsewhere too, so although it may be a lot of work now, it does pay off later as I can knock this stuff out pretty quick.

    Ryan,

PS: Kyle, I do recall you saying almost the same thing about our old forum … http://www.s14.invisionfree.com/dunedinicehockey%5B/url:nf240cpj%5D <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/tongue.gif" alt=":P” title=”Tongue” />

I’ve been fiddling, but I’m not sure that Joomla is significantly better for running this site than WordPress. This is a case of either adding functions to WordPress or removing functions from Joomla. Joomla has a much more complicated (bloated) back end.

Wordpress just takes a bit of hacking to turn it into a CMS that’s all. The only major thing I haven’t got it to do yet is to build in a full permissions system so that I can limit what people can edit. The way I have it now I can’t let individuals edit a single static page, they can either edit ALL of them, or none at all. Although I CAN limit them to adding news posts to certain pages, or even adding news posts but them having to be reviewed by myself or a global moderator. But the static pages are a little different. Since it’s primarily a blogging tool, static pages really aren’t it’s strong point. But mostly it’s only news posts which need to be added by non admin people. Static page edits should be fairly rare. Although I’m sure if I try hard enough I’ll eventually figure out how to put a better permissions system in – either that or a plugin will be developed.

[i:z626mw9d]Important Note:[/i:z626mw9d] I’m planning to move the news postings to not only the home page but sometimes to a page about that particular topic. So a post on the DIHL page would also show up on the home page until it is either moved to the news archive or it’s too old for the home page and gets automatically removed (from the home page). Hence editing static pages shouldn’t need to be done regularly which it is at the moment.

Oh yeah, ability to edit the menu isn’t an option at this stage either as WordPress can’t handle drop downs (editing them that is), although neither can Joomla without a plugin (I think). And the plugin isn’t available for Joomla 1.5 (yet). A plugin for WordPress will most likely be developed for this eventually though and could be added then – there’s one under development at the moment. I could build an editor for it myself, but I’d probably just wait till an off the shelf one was available.

I’m still open to being convinced otherwise though <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/tongue.gif" alt=":P” title=”Tongue” /> I haven’t done much more than mess round with it, so I’m no Joomla expert or anything.

    Hey Stefan,
Did Bode ask you to post that rundown of the game above? If so I’ll post it on the Dunedin Premier Series page[/url:gt9hn18g] as well coz that’s where she got me to put the first two.

They’re also awarded to administrators as well. Daniel Jang got one a few years back for his efforts in creating the Otago University Inline Hockey Club and Dunedin Aces Inline Hockey Club.

I think you’ve just created a whole arse load more work for me Chris  :'( :'( :'(

There’s a few things in Joomla that I probably could use for this site. In particular I was eyeing up the “Mass Email” function which could be darn useful for using as a club email database system assuming it does what I want it to and that no one ends up making a custom built one for us.

Plus the user management features are probably better than WordPress too.

I’ll have a good fiddle with it this weekend perhaps and see if I can transfer all the WordPress posts/pages over to it – I’d better be able to coz they took me quite some time to transfer!

P.S. I’ve been playing around with Joomla a bit, and it seems like a pretty powerful bit of kit! After playing with both Joomla and WordPress, I would have thought that Joomla would be the better engine for powering dunedinicehockey.hellyer.kiwi

I’ll give it a bash. Will depend if it can handle the news postings as well as WordPress. You can do some pretty funky stuff with the Blog posting function of WordPress which applies nicely to news postings.
