I totally disagree. I think that’s the worlds shittiest way of contacting people. It’d work if EVERYONE was available by text … but they’re not. Unless there was a 100% coverage of players by that route I don’t think it’s a good idea at all. Contact details and lists of who attends what practices don’t even seem to be kept, so even if there are accurate lists of everyones cell numbers it’s still going to fail some people. There’s been some EXTREMELY pissed off players in the past few years who have turned up to practice after travelling from out of town, just to turn up to an empty rink; 95% of the players knew there was no practice on, but 5% didn’t, unsurprisingly those 5% aren’t happy, particularly when they’ve looked on the website and confirmed that the practice was indeed on.

Chris, change your permalink structure (found under options) to “Date and name based”. That way your URLs will look pretty, whereas they’re hideous at the moment!

I’d recommend removing the “Category” and “Archive” options from the sidebar too as they’re not much use until there’s a whole heap of posts made. And you could remove the “Pages” from the sidebar as well, since they’re also in the header menu anway. They’re most likely found in the sidebar.php file. You can just add some comment tags around them in case you want to add them back in at a later date.

I wouldn’t think it would be that hard if we made email and cellphone mandantory information at registration, to load them into a central database would it.
Even if you setup a hotmail/gmail account, with groups midgets/seniors etc it would be fairly easy to send bulk emails every time they need to be sent.[/quote:1w8a2nsb]

Yep, albeit a hotmail/gmail account isn’t such a good idea.

I was told that email and cell numbers would be collected at registration this year, but it wasn’t <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/sad.gif" alt=":(” title=”Sad” /> Hopefully that doesn’t happen for 2008 though. It seems to be more of an issue for people now which is good to see.

Chris, I’m currently uploading some plugins for you to try.

The “advanced menus” one is particular useful as the default admin menu is completely shit.

“All in one SEO pack” is good at … well … SEO stuff!
    Ditto for the Sitemap generator

“Visualise advanced features” just gives access to some more of the wysywig editor functions. Once installed, you just click a button on the menu and it pops open some more helpful wysiwyg buttons.

Ryan, have you thought about the addition of a “New to hockey?” section on the main page that I suggested a short while ago?

Yep, keep yer pants on. It’s comin’!

Good idea by the way, and the rest of you will see what Chris suggested eventually – not sure when that will be – possibly this weekend, but maybe not.

I’m figuring there’s no real hurry for this as it’s unlikely to be used much until next season anyway.

Fair enough. I haven’t had the same success with email myself, but as a former DIHL organiser, you’d probably have a far better idea than I.
    [/quote:orgpj90y]

I agree with Kyle on this. Albeit I’d give at least a week for people to read any email you send them. Some people only check their email once a week!?

I don’t think the issues with email in the club are related to peoples lack of using email, but more lack of the club having a reliable email system setup. We had that for the DIHL, but had no possible way to extend that to cover the club as a whole. The other issue is that decisions are made WAAYYY too late. For example the decision to rejig the Thursday night sessions should have been made a long time ago, not at the last minute like this. That way those who don’t check their email very often will have time to check it and those who don’t will hopefully find out through the grapevine and probably directly via their coach. Those people who don’t use email were generally covered by text massaging although a few fell through the cracks. We also had a few gremlins creep in as we somehow missed a few emails off our list a couple of times, albeit that was rectified later on.

My understanding is that steps are underway to obtain contact details from all players next season. Although I was told the same thing last season so we’ll wait and see.

I think much of this can be ironed out with an effective scheduling system. Hence I’m working on that at the mo. Will remain to be seen whether it actually gets finished or not though.

    Ryan,

PS: Some people do get pissy if they aren’t contacted by phone and are treated like a little baby. They can get particularly irate if they’re not personally reminded about registering for things. Those people tend to be so annoying I’m usually happy they didn’t register anyway though. I think this is an issue which is rapidly improving with time though as people realise they NEED to use email to find out what’s going on.

I’ve never seen any which work for NZ. Or at least, none that have worked long term. There have been services which were introduced, before adding a charge to them later on once they’ve got you hooked on it.

I don’t know who is responsible for this kind of thing, but whoever’s being so slow at getting important information to you is really fucking players over.[/quote:3um03wa4]

It’s not so much the fault of anyone, but the setup of the committee which is at fault here. There aren’t any procedures for dealing with this stuff unfortunately so it ends up coming down to word of mouth via the grapevine.

If I can get Julian and Callan to get a scheduling system up and running for us this should help enormously. Fingers crossed for 2008.

I’d go so far as to suggest an investment in a SMS-system, the like of which is employed by Video Ezy, medical practices and, most recently, my hairdresser. They are not particularly expensive to run, and people, kids especially, generally respond well to text information.
    [/quote:3um03wa4]

Costs a minimum of about 13c per text. So can get a bit costly if you need to send stuff on a regular basis. James van Leeuwen had some interesting advice on setting up and auto emailing system for the site which I’ll be looking into. Ie: Important news would get automatically emailed to those who’ve registered for it.

I’ll probably be supplying instructions at some stage for setting up peoples Facebook accounts to feed news posts directly into their profile, possibly even into their Mini-Feed. That way it acts as both a news source for the person who’s profile it’s on, but also as an advertisement to anyone who’s reading that persons profile. Some of the news posts would also show up on other peoples News Feeds, so that wouldn’t even need to visit the persons profile to see the news posts, just having them as a friend would feed some of them through (not all mini-feed things get fed through to the news feed in Facebook).

Well this is ridiculously late notice, but Jackie has replied to my email.

Apparently ALL practices have been cancelled apart from Adult beginners. And the one tomorrow night is a one-off and opinions will be collected on who, what, why, when and how any new practices for 2007 will be organised.

Hopefully I’ll be able to get some sort of procedure put in place for 2008 for dealing with this stuff, as it’s quite haphazard relying on random bits of info. flowing in via the grapevine like this.

I wondered who that was in goal! Actually that was a pretty kick ass job, thumbs up.

No where near as good as those cross crease sprawls by Jaimee to block the annoying pass, pass, pass, shoot approach of the Jets though!

Well that sucks. At least both teams got to play though.

For anyone interested in the technicalities of why it’s a default, I think these rules cover it:

The Sharks played without a goalie, so not surprising the Bullfrogs tonked a few into the open net. The Bullfrogs benefited from a vastly improved ability NOT to get called for off-sides every few minutes, but that wasn’t enough to keep them in the game. A solid performance by the Sharks though to win the game anyway. Sharks 7 Bullfrogs 4.

A much improved performance by John McGlashan saw them score a goal and keep Kings to only four goals. Kings 4 John McGlashan 1. If the Johnnies team continue this rapid improvement they may yet move from the wooden spoon position come semi-finals time.

My pick, 3-2 to the Jets[/quote:lyguucya]

A high scoring game this one. Nick Patchett sunk one in the Jets net at the start of the game, but the Jets put in a flurry of goals and kept the puck firmly down the Bears end of the rink for much of the game. Some poor defense by the Jets let a few more Bears goals in. Another solid effort by Bears goalie Jaimee Wood kept the Jets tally to a minimum. Jets 10 Bears 4.

There’s a video clip of this game available … http://www.dunedinicehockey.hellyer.kiwi/forum/index.php?topic=1079.0%5B/url:lyguucya%5D
