Hi Folks
Have just spoken to Phil about yesterdays meeting. Apparently after much debate and venting of problems it was passed unanimously that Dunedin can apply for another team to play in the NZIHL. We still need to get the offical approval from NZIHL but my understanding was they would back us. this approval (or non approval) should happen soon. So all you checkers out there, better start training.

The approval process should be plain sailing from here on in. The stumbling block in getting a team was the SIHL, not the NZIHL. Although this is getting pretty late to be arranging a team for 2008 so hopefully they don’t move the new teams entry forward to 2009.

I’ve played a bit of recreational level senior hockey in Calgary. I competed in the University of Calgary Intramural Hockey League B-grade (they had A, B, C and a contact grade). Christchurch premier grade teams would have slotted in nicely into their A-grade and Christchurch A-grade teams would be around their C-grade although they have a wider range of players. Peoples definition of “recreational” is a bit different to New Zealand’s “recreational” hockey. Recreational teams in Canada are often a lot more serious than teams here, so don’t be put off by the tag “recreational”, the players have usually played to quite a high level in the past and aren’t training as hard anymore, but that doesn’t mean they don’t take it seriously. NZIHL teams would be above the level of most actual recreational level teams there. If you are heading to Calgary, then definitely let me know as I can hook you up with some teams/leagues to contact and let you know roughly what level you’d want to be playing at.

As Vince said though, it’ll depend on where you are as to what level you’d be playing at. There’s leagues everywhere though and you should be able to find a team to play for. The trick is to actively look for a team, even advertising for one may be necessary as you usually need to know someone to get on a team. I played in a social scrimmage at lunch times for a while and met heaps of people from that and eventually managed to wrangle my way into a couple of different teams that way.

[b:2dlz9oga]Off-topic:[/b:2dlz9oga] The pic below is where I played most of my hockey in Calgary. It’s the Olympic Oval where the 1988 Olympic speed skating was held. There’s two international sized rinks in the middle surrounded by a long track speed skating oval. It’s also where I met Jenel Bode and where she asked me the question “So, yer from New Zealand eh? Do you have any idea how I’d go about getting a job there?” – and that’s how we got a coach in Dunedin <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/cheesy.gif" alt=":D” title=”Cheesy” />

Check the rules on that Ryan. Semi-finals and finals go to extra time followed by penalty shootout.

Well lets hope the Bullfrogs don’t put Laing on for a penalty shootout as they’ll look like complete asses when they score an own goal!

[b:1nue9n9q]Semi-Finals Picks![/b:1nue9n9q][/size:1nue9n9q]
Sooo … the big semi-finals are upon us.

We’ve had action aplenty in the round robin so far. All pre-season predictions were out the window with the Sharks turning up with an extremely solid lineup and stomping on all the other teams, winning every game so far. The Büllfrögs have stepped up to the plate to take second place in the leaderboard, but that all means nothing now as whoever wins each of the two semi-finals games will make it through to the end of season show stopping finale.

[b:1nue9n9q]Wooden Spoon – Bears vs John McGlashan[/b:1nue9n9q][/size:1nue9n9q]
Before the semi-finals get underway, the competition for the wooden spoon will be fought between John McGlashan College and the Mighty Bears. John McGlashan humiliated the Bears 13-0 in one of their games last season and the Bears got their vengeance last Wednesday with a 9-0 thumping in the round robin. After that thumping last week, John McGlashan have been looking at various ways to bolster their lineup for the big game on Wednesday, unfortunately most of the options they’ve been considering will cause them to default their game lol. The Bears will be short both the older Patchett and Roth boys, but will still be looking solid with some exceptional talent in their forward lineup who will be looking to sink even more pucks in the John McGlashan net than last time. This is a huge game for the Mighty Bears, they’ve moved from getting absolutely decimated in 2006, then recruited some stronger players for Autumn 2007 but still lost every game and they’re now stepping up the intensity in a big way for the Spring 2007 season. All of the Bears have been training non-stop all season long for this, the younger players are hot off of a massive season with the Peewees and most of the adults have been training hard out at the beginners practice all year long. My pick: 10-0 to Bears, the Patchetts and Roths to pick up hat tricks and  Martin to sink one of those big wrist shots in again.

[b:1nue9n9q]Semi-final numero uno – Sharks vs Jets[/b:1nue9n9q][/size:1nue9n9q]
The Sharks are looking extremely strong. They haven’t dropped a beat all season long and are looking to cruise into the finals. The only way they can lose is if their goalie doesn’t turn up or they get too cocky. The Sharks won against the Büllfrögs with no goalie, but this tactic is unlikely to work against the Jets. The Büllfrögs did not have the firepower that the Jets have, both Sedgwick and Noble are dangerous on attack and will definitely be looking to score numerous goals if the Sharks goalie is a no show again. My pick: 4-0 to Sharks. Kliegl, both Wilsons and Johnstone to pick up the goals.

[b:1nue9n9q]Semi-final numero duo – Büllfrögs vs Kings[/b:1nue9n9q][/size:1nue9n9q]
On paper Kings are extremely strong, much stronger than the Büllfrögs. But in practice the Kings team has been very inconsistent and lacking the discipline of the other teams in the league. The Büllfrögs are more organised, have better defense, better positioning and a better goalie, but are desperately lacking in the goal scoring department. If Kings makes it past the Büllfrögs defense they’re likely to rely on some big rushes either off the faceoff or from goaline to goaline puck hogging runs. If the Büllfrögs anticipate those rushes and make sure they never leave any holes in their defense, then this is likely to be a down to the wire affair. My pick: 1-1, goals will go to Läïng and Dilkes. This puts the decision on who goes to the finals down to the goal differential which will be Kings 23, Büllfrögs 20, so Kings will be heading to the finals to faceoff against the Sharks.

My bad! I need to pay off the bills for the Caledonian gym first.

What you could do though Tom. Is just tell us all to turn up at a particular spot at an exact time and we’ll all turn up. The courts at Kavanagh College are a good option, ditto for George St junior school. We did that a bit last time and it worked quite well. Leave a post here and chances are everyone will text everyone else and we should have a decent turnout. We did this quite a bit last summer and it worked well.

And before anyone suggests it … beside the rink is crappy. It’s cold, windy, there’s no walls and there’s a big dip in the middle of, plus there’s often cars about.

and 8.20pm is 2nd vs 3rd -> Bullfrogs vs Kings[/quote:dx4jax8l]

Lol, you’d think it would be easy enough to work out a schedule correctly wouldn’t you! But apparently not. Thanks for the correction. I’ll edit the original post accordingly.

It’s pretty lame for us to win fifth place by default though. It would be nice to win it fair and square. I have a few ideas I’ll suggest to Stefan in private though as a compromise. There’s nothing stopping them defaulting though, apart from us preferring to win properly.

There are a lot of players in the B grade who are past B Grade level but they still play and like Stefan said he is not gonna to score a million goals he just wants help Johnnies.[/quote:mu9qiwp5]

They were given dispensations before the season to play, although they shouldn’t be there either IMO (including me). I’m assuming this issue will be addressed for the 2008 season by the new organisers though.

I’ve received an email from the Johnnies team manager about Stefan and I’ll have a chat with Stefan tomorrow if he’s free (email coming your way soon Stef). The Bears got thumped by similar amounts last season and we seemed to have more fun than most of the other teams, so putting a player who is ridiculously better than us on the ice against us in the game which will see us rise from our eternal wooden spoon position is a bit cheeky.

But I’m sure some sort of compromise can be sorted which will keep everyone happy … watch this space!

cheers,
Ryan

Hey whats the deal with adding players to our lineup for Jonnies, is this possible?

Because in all honesty they are not nearly as good as the bears, and it is nearly impossible for them to skate around someone like ryan hellyer on defence, so any chance I can play the final games for them? As theyve asked if I can. Its not like im going to skate around everyone and score 10 goals in a game, the point of me playing for them is to act as a player/coach to help them get some confidence and to provide a few more opportunities for them, not score their goals for them.
[/quote:2ztwwkrq]

They can recruit whoever they want as long as they’re not graded a above 5. You are a 9 I think. They were offered a 6 and a 7 who had been given dispensation to play in the B-grade, but the 7 didn’t want to play with them after the first game and I think their 6 wasn’t wanted, or chose not to play for them or something like that.
