Besides all that, I’m not sure if you’ve noticed but there’s a lot of contact going on as it is, and while I appreciate the jobs the referees do, they’re pretty inconsistent in calling penalties[/quote:15lubst4]

I think the refereeing standard has jumped up a notch in the last few weeks actually. If things improve like this for a while we should be in good shape for next season! We have a distinct problem in that all of our refs by regular standards would be considered inexperienced. This isn’t their fault and we should probably be a bit nicer to them because of it. It’s just a property of the rink only being built in the past year or so and most of the old refs from Big Chill days being long gone. Give it a year or two and we’ll be fine hopefully. In the mean time players need to do some self reffing which aint gonna happen probably.

Big thanks to Phil by the way for having the referees sorted for us. Otherwise Kyle and I would be stuck with another annoying job to deal with.

    cheers.

I don’t get it – you are still harping on about the refs enforcement of face masks and in the next breath you are making a case for contact hockey and making legal challenges so women can participate – yeah right! safety is obviously a high priority in your books [/quote:1fd9mmi3]

Er, I think I haven’t explained myself very well at all here. I was more speaking from a philosophical point of view. I have no intention of competing in any contact hockey leagues here in Dunedin and I agree with Mike Sam and Steve Jackson’s views on it entirely.

I’m not suggesting at all that anyone challenges anyone over the issue, just trying to figure out if there’s some way the way women could be squirmed into the competition without running into issues with breaking various rules etc. If a contact league were to go ahead then I think the women should be allowed to play. I’m not sure the club would be keen on any of these ideas anyway, so it’s all probably a moot point. Plus I’m not interested in having anything to do with running a full contact league, mainly due to the same issues that Mike and Steve have mentioned.

    Very true!

I spoke to his mum last night and she apparently had nothing whatsoever to do with helping him organise the team. He did all off his own back and has no record of ever doing anything like this before. She said she thought it was pie in the sky idea at first but when he started collecting in hundreds of dollars she realised he might actually pull it off, which he did.

He’s apparently looking for a job at the moment, so if anyone knows of anything suitable for a 14 year old then let him know. I also told his mum that if ever needed a job reference to come see us as we/I would happily write him a glowing one.

    More penalties I say!

I thought the refereeing standard was quite good last night though, much improved on previous games this season. But, unfortunately apparently neither Shaun or Phil heard the racial slurs.

I hope if the referees ever do hear something like that, that they come down on the players pretty hard. I’m not sure of the exact penalties for such things but I would guess it’s something like a game misconduct, I could be wrong though and can’t be assed looking it up right now.

Interesting! I guess we know what you’re studying then!

Quite dissapointing too, as I think that’s quite inappropriate. Although it would be interesting to see what the reaction would be if (for example) there was no mens netball league in Dunedin and I decided I wanted to play. Same situation, genders reversed.

And yes, forming a full-contact league seperate from the IIHF is quite reasonable, but seperate from the NZIHF and hence DIHA (who are directly affiliated to the NZIHF) could be more problematic as the DIHA supply us with cheap ice time, uniforms and a bunch of other stuff. Of course the DIHA could supply such equipment to a ‘different’ organisation to run a contact league, that’s probably more of an option. Although I suspect a few of the committee members may have issues with that. Seems like it could be a reasonable option if someone could convince the club of it. Any women out there feel like organising a full-contact hockey league seperate from the DIHA?

    Also:
I asked Paul Roth about the referees not enforcing equipment rules issue on Tuesday night and he seemed to think there was no liability issue with the refs not bothering to enforce rules which could only potentially injure the players in question. The only time there would be any liability issues would be if we didn’t bother informing the players of the rules or if their equipment caused injury to another player, for example if a broken stick was used and it speared someone else through the guts.

Jake Woodhouse for manager of the year then, I guess I didn’t think much about him during the season as his team just turned up and I never actually had to deal with him.

No prize giving, but perhaps we should award some anyway, even it is only by email.

    My picks:

We’ve had some really good team managers this season so I think some awards to them are in order.

Manager of the season: Mark Hareb

some sort of award for Claire for having such a well organised team would be good and something for Jake Woodhouse for out of the blue pulling together a team and turning up with $770! He’s only 14 years old so getting a team organised all is quite impressive. I’m not sure what to call those awards though.

Highest number of goals of the season: no idea, need the rest of the stats first. Although it’s possibly Justin Bigg for the B-grade.

Most improved player. Jason Sedgwick has improved a lot, although there’s possibly some more suitable awardees.

Anyone else have any more ideas?

[quote:23zvehwq]The other is that, in its wisdom, the NZIHF (and I believe the IIHF) has banned women from playing contact. I personally don’t agree with this, and I’d suspect it’s a breach of the Human Rights Act, as its discriminating on the basis of gender – I’d much rather an assessment be made of both men and women based on something much more practical, such as size, ability, or actually knowing how to play contact hockey. [/quote:23zvehwq]

I totally agree with you on that. If I was a woman and wanted to play full contact hockey I’d be extremely irate. I’d like to see someone challenge that ruling, although the hassle will probably prevent anyone from trying.

A few things. First, make sure at the beginning of the compatition, the refs are told what to enforce for equipment. [/quote:1m4fic0k]

They were, although it obviously needs to be outlined in more detail next time round.

I think it could be developed into a contact level[/quote:1m4fic0k]

I think an extra grade for full-contact would be fine, there’s certainly some demand for it, but I’d be very concerned if the A-grade became a contact grade as the whole purpose of this was to form something for the players who don’t want to participate in the contact league. The contact league subsequently died due to lack of anyone to organise it. I think there is room for both leagues, albeit they’d have to run at different times of the year or they’d both butcher each others team rosters.

Oh yeah, and naming wise, I think it would be wise to follow these:
    Dunedin Ice Hockey League A-grade
    Dunedin Ice Hockey League A-grade
    Dunedin Ice Hockey League Contact-grade

There was some confusion as to what the DIHA A-grade competition was and what it had to do with the DIHL this year and the SK8 Cup and Thai Over Cup’s were both effectively leagues so I think it makes sense to put them under the same banner. The NHL play for the Stanley Cup so it seems fitting that the Dunedin Ice Hockey League Contact-grade could play for the SK8 Cup or whatever too.

Any volunteers to run a contact league in 2007?

I actually quite like the idea of splitting it even further into 3 A-grade teams, 4 B-grade teams and 4 C-grade teams. We definitely have enough players for it, but it seems that many people aren’t fond of the idea at all. Hopefully we’ll have more grades at some stage though.

I know some of the very elite players in the A-grade (ice black level players) were more keen on having 3 A-grade teams to ramp the skill level up a notch or too. Personally I find that I’m in the top pool of players in the B-grade and the bottom of the A-grade and would much rather play in a league around my own level, so a three grade system would suit me perfectly. This is how the Christchurch SNC operates and it’s very effective, although they have 4 teams in their top league and 6 and 4 in their next two, we’re not quite at that point as yet though. Maybe in another year we’ll have enough players to justify that.

Okay, the mobile site has now changed to http://www.dunedinicehockey.hellyer.kiwi/mobile

Apparently the word handheld implied something dodgy!? I guess I’m too innocent to pick up on such things. I’ve also added a bunch of extra stuff and it’s not a test version anymore, it’s the real mcoy!

I’m guessing this is the first New Zealand ice hockey mobile website! So congratulations to me <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/smiley.gif" alt=":)” title=”Smiley” />
And congratulations to Jane, Stefan, Brent and some random guy from the Stampede who are now the first people to have their photos shown on a New Zealand ice hockey mobile website.

The Bullfrogs are actually looking fairly strong. Hopefully Becky Brassett will be back in net (she was back last week too) and Rob Wadell has replaced me on the defensive line.

Possibly forgotten about! Joyce sends me the stats each week, but after week 5 I sent Joyce an email asking if she could send the results of the games to me pronto so I could work out the semi-finals schedule but that I didn’t need the stats immediately. So I guess she’s sent the results and forgotten about sending the stats. I’ll send her another email to remind her.
