Removing the drop downs was a good idea I think, I couldn’t view the site on my pda because of it.
I haven’t taken much interest in the forums lately so I haven’t exactly made comments or looked at the site in detail like that, The best I can do is give it a go now and do it right if you’d like to work with me on that.
There are a few approaches we can take that will hopefully get the site on the right track to being very user friendly, but its important that we do it right rather than me/chris doing forum posts of what we think.
MichaelMemberFrom a usuability stand point, not being able to by pass the main page is bad. It is very hard to find your way to the forum unless you know where to look or the URL as it does not stand out, especially for new users who we would hope will sign up for the forum and ask questions, not having a link in the main nav is limiting.
[quote:2bvvq697]I’m not sure there’s enough room for that. And it’s not just the important news, I’d rather people actually read ALL of the news, or at least the titles so they can pick and choose what they want to read.
I’ll add a link to the forum index on the home page shortly to save you guys typing it in/bookmarking it.[/quote:2bvvq697]
By taking it away from the main menu you are infact incouraging the oposite as people will more than likely bookmark the forum index instead, the reason people like looking at the index is because it gives more information, like when the last post was made and by who.
Also on the topic of usuability, the forum menu is very very obscure, It is hard to find the links as they are liny and gray. These should stand out a lot more otherwise people will simply not find them. There is a big difference after you know where they are, but from first glimpse It took me over 30seconds to spot them, and I’m a little more fimiliar with websites.
The best idea is to maybe do a little usability testing for the site, I’m keen to co-ordinate some as practice for services we offer at work. This would give us a good idea of how to make the site easier to use for people which I think is a key thing for this website?
MichaelMemberyeah I know <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/sad.gif" alt="” title=”Sad” /> I might add something now actually.
I plan on putting up a blog for it or something if it gets decent use, I do have plans to expand it as well but I won’t if people don’t find it useful

MichaelMemberLOL has become something along the lines of “I am amused”, its origins on the internet come from “laugh out loud” or “lots of laughs”. LOL can be used effectively if interrupted correctly.
Generally if lol is used at the end of a sentence in lower case it would mean “Im making light of what I just said and don’t want you to take it seriously as it may be mildly funny or sarcastic”
When lol is used in lower case as a reply it generally means “It was humorous but I did’nt split my sides laughing, better try harder next time buddy and can’t be bothered carrying on this conversation”
LOL in uppercase will generally mean the person found something generally funny, followed by more LOL’s means they found it really funny eg. LOLOLOLOL LOLL1@!@!!!# AWDE!!!
When someone finds something VERY funny they might compliment LOL with one of its counterparts like ROFL or LMAO also.
MichaelMemberUnique visits should help out with the actual number of people viewing the forums?
