I’m not sure why they didn’t stretch it out some more and have the games on the Sunday as well.
I believe the Brisbane Rusty Blades are supposed to be very good, so those games might be worth watching. They games are 3 x 15 minute periods, non-checking, no slap shots.
KyleMemberCoaching coordinator is Larry Wheeler. coaching@dunedinicehockey.hellyer.kiwi should reach him. DIHL teams don’t have practices, but the age grades do, weeknights.
KyleMemberI don’t know if it was a pin – maybe it was a badge. But someone was waving one around last year, I can’t remember who. I remember Jackie commenting on it.
KyleMemberSend the damn man a pin!
Make it first of course!
KyleMemberWhere does NZIHL stuff go? I thought we were just hosting SIHL stuff.
KyleMemberI’d presume if the premiere series happened again, the DIHL would be everyone left – an open competition.
You couldn’t take 30 players out of the A grade and run it, there’s only ever been about 50 at most players in it.
KyleMemberThat’s the Dunedin Ice Hockey League. it will start at the same time (ish) – we wait for the varsity students to come back, which is end of February, then there’s a couple of weeks of pulling it together, so mid-March it will likely start then.
I’m not sure if Thunder players will be playing in the DIHL this year. That’s something to be negotiated between the two.
KyleMemberI believe there won’t be a Sunday game this weekend as the rink is being prepared for curling. Graham will no doubt confirm.
KyleMemberThe planning weekend set in place a 7 game premiere series which was timetabled to start towards the end of March. That hasn’t been finalised yet, but that would probably be a good place to start.
Someone else would know more about what’s happening with Thunder – practises, trials etc.
KyleMemberMan, Osgood had a shocker of a weekend. He was pretty bad in the young guns game, and then the first period of the big kids game he didn’t get any better. Took a while for the West to figure out playing defense without checking however.
My play of the weekend was the replay they showed of a kid from between periods in an Ottawa Dallas game taking a penalty shot. He got the puck up on his stick, spun around and backhanded it into the net. Was better than anything that the NHL players put on in the skills competition, and the kid was only 9 years old. Betcha there’s some scouts checking him out.
KyleMemberA few weeks ago I was on holiday and got a message on my cell from a reporter at the Dominion Post who was looking for Steve Jackson to comment on some crazy kayaking thing that some people were doing.
This morning I got a call from a reporter at a radio station in Auckland who was trying to find out how to get hold of the under-20 team management or coach. To which I replied “umm, no idea”.
Apparently I’ve become the default contact person for all things ice hockey.
KyleMemberYeah, if you got a blank screen, go find a bunch of codecs and install them.
It doesn’t give an error message or anything, which isn’t particularly useful, but ‘nothing’ typically means a codec problem.
KyleMemberJust as another note, the NZ U20 Team beat hosts Serbia yesterday, 5-4, and South Africa this morning 7-3. Good job. They’ll now be promoted up to Division II.
It’s all looking up for NZ ice hockey at present.

It would almost be pointless if the only other team are the Snipers (one would have to be optimistic to think they will be beaten). !0 keen players will do it though. I’ve talked to Stefan a while back and he liked the idea. Just trying to suss out further interest.
[/quote:2mxnws6r]We got close-ish to Snipers a few years ago. Lost 9-5 I think? We had half the team full of very talented North Americans, and the other half, us less than talented mere mortals. Two or three better players, or a good goalie, and we probably could have run them real close. I presume they’re not the force they used to be either – seem to be struggling at nationals.
KyleMemberYeah, that is of course ‘Option B’.
I’ll consider it done then, can’t make someone reply to emails. Cheers.
