KyleMemberMenus work ok, but the entire section below that (white) starts further to the left than it should.
The dates in the news are also having some issues vertically in relation to the actual news content. I’ll email you a screen shot.
KyleMemberRyan,
The clock on the forum is out by an hour. Most likely it’s taken from the time on the computer, which means that the hosting company hasn’t adjusted their time for daylight savings, but it might be a setting in the forum.
It grates every time I see it!
KyleMemberAnd week 7. I’ve already covered the A grade final in detail, let’s take a peek at the other four games this time around.
"Kyle":9muz1wr4 wrote:John McGlashan vs Beasts. Kyle’s pick. I’m sticking with the favourites, but close. 4-3 by the final whistle to Johnnies.[/quote:9muz1wr4]5-2 to Johnnies. McLean and Wakelin get doubles, Sedgwick and McLaughlin pick up singles for the Beasts. Again, not enough shots on JMs goalie to put pressure on them, even with Johnnies racking up 36 penalty minutes – clearly the Johnnies shorthanded team works pretty well together to hold that up.
"Kyle":9muz1wr4 wrote:At 8pm the Ducks take on the Stars in the playoff for 3-4 in the A grade. Neither have had the happiest season this DIHL, Stars have 2 losses and 4 draws (surely a record!), and Ducks have 1 win, 4 losses, 1 draw. Stars will be pumping for a win – a couple of well-placed goals in those drawn games would have seen them playing in the final. And Ducks certainly have the talent, but while they’ve been playing well as a team, it hasn’t seemed to work out for them this season. Kyle’s pick: Stars to grab it, 4-3.[/quote:9muz1wr4]6-1. Ducks were in it until end of the first period, and then shortly after, they went from one up, and never looked like scoring much again. Stars, once they got fired up looked pretty lethal, and it would have been interesting to see them playing like that all season.
"Kyle":9muz1wr4 wrote:And in the B Grade, at 6pm Bullfrogs take on the Bears, in what should be a friendly game. Bears have come close a couple of times this DIHL, but haven’t really had it to mix it up with the big boys. Bullfrogs are probably going to struggle unless they find a replacement for Hellyer. I’m picking Bears to get a second win, 4-2 (later revised to Bullfrogs 4-2).[/quote:9muz1wr4]Bullfrogs take it 3-2. Biggs gets a hat trick, Spiers and Williams knock goals in for Bears. Brassett again plays well, topping the goal saving sheet for the grade.
"Kyle":9muz1wr4 wrote:OBHS take on Kings, who are backing up from what sounded like a pretty rough game last week, after a bit of a scrap broke out after the final whistle. OBHS haven’t had a happy season at all, and I’m picking that to continue to Kings roll over on them a bit, taking it 6-1.[/quote:9muz1wr4]Perfect pick on the score. Kings spread goals around, OBHS goalie does well, but just too many shots on their net, while only taking 5 at Kings.
Well done to all the players in all grades. Good season!
KyleMemberWeek 6!
"Kyle":1drr86v0 wrote:OBHS vs Bears: Both these teams are out of finals contention. OBHS pushed Kings hard last week, but fell one short, which means Bullfrogs sneak into the fourth spot. This game is technically the playoff for 5th and 6th. Neither team has had a happy season, but both will be looking to finish on a high note (they both have a friendly game against the losers of the semis next week). I’m picking OBHS to take it 4-2.[/quote:1drr86v0]OBHS pick it up with a 4-1 victory, McCaughan gets a hat trick. Bears not really in it, only putting four shots on net.
"Kyle":1drr86v0 wrote:John McGlashan vs Bullfrogs: Bullfrogs are really up against it in the semis. Johnnies have been looking the business all season, including a big whalloping of Bullfrogs earlier on. Bullfrogs won’t be so bad this time around, but they’re already missing Hellyer, so they’ll continue to suffer. Kyle’s pick: Johnnies 6-2.[/quote:1drr86v0]Johnnies take it 4-1. That’s a good effort from the ‘frogs, with Biggs picking up another lone goal for his head, and Johnnies spreading it around. Having Brassett back in goal has helped the frogs out here big time, but they also only made four shots on goal, and you can’t win hockey games like that.
"Kyle":1drr86v0 wrote:Beasts vs Kings: This might be a closer game, Kings are a bit of a dark horse in the competition, and thought they lost pretty well to Beasts first time around, I’m picking that they’ll come closer this time and put some heat on the Beasties. All the same, the Beasts are clearly ahead of the rest of the pack in 2nd place, and I’m going for 5-3 final score.[/quote:1drr86v0]This game got nasty. Kings rack up 26 minutes in penalties, but unable to get a single goal, and there was a bunch of rough stuff both during the game, and after the whistle. Silly really. Sedgwick gets a hat trick, Dudley gets the big shutout on 8 shots.
KyleMemberSome very old picks, just running through them seeing how I went.
Week 5
"Kyle":3vnp5giz wrote:[b:3vnp5giz]OBHS vs Kings[/b:3vnp5giz]OBHS scored their first point last week, and a win here would see them in the running for the finals, but Kings suffered hard last week, and will be wanting to come back and win to cement third place. Kyle’s pick: Kings 4-1.[/quote:3vnp5giz]
Kings take it narrowly 6-5 over OBHS, and that knocks OBHS out of the running for the final.
Adam Bodnachuk gets the hat trick for Kings, McCaughan and Muirhead both get doubles for OBHS. Ihaia again does well in goal for OBHS, stopping 20 shots."Kyle":3vnp5giz wrote:[b:3vnp5giz]Beasts vs Bullfrogs[/b:3vnp5giz]Beasts have looked the business all DIHL, and the Bullfrogs have gotten better, but not good enough. There’s going to be Bullfrog splattered all over the rink, and I’m picking it’ll go to 8-1 to the Beasties.[/quote:3vnp5giz]
7-1, I was close. Blackett gets a hat trick – he’d have been stoked about that one. Biggs again gets Bullfrog’s solitary goal. Big difference in the goaltenders here helps Beasts out – Dudley runs at 90%, Williams struggles to break 50% saves.
"Kyle":3vnp5giz wrote:[b:3vnp5giz]John McGlashan vs Bears[/b:3vnp5giz]Bears will be running scared against Johnnies, and rightly so. MacLean has been in good form this season, piling on a heap of goals, and the Bears just aren’t going to have an answer to the kids from JMs. My pick: 7-0 to JMs.[/quote:3vnp5giz]
Another close one, 7-1 to JMs. McLean and Kliegl pick up two more hat tricks, Larry Wheeler stops a whole heap of shots, but you can’t take 34 shots vs putting 5 on and expect to win.
"Kyle":3vnp5giz wrote:That would see finals qualification, in order, for JMs, Beasts, Kings, and Bullfrogs sneaking in at 4th.[/quote:3vnp5giz]Got that bit right.
KyleMemberbeautiful.
KyleMemberOK, I went to mangle Mark, but it looks like someone beat me to it. One side of his face came pre-done!
KyleMemberHaha, good luck. You’re going to have to take over running the meetings if that’s how you want it to work.
I was blown away by the attitude to the funding applications. The idea that we should apply for as much money as we felt we could justify on paper, just to employ a person for a full year… I thought that was greedy. It’d be great for whoever ended up getting the job, but if we actually got $40,000, there’s no way that we’d need that amount of money, and the excess $10,000 is money that the funder couldn’t give to another sport/charity.
And to go to the same two places for both coaching and ice time – effectively what that was saying to me is that the association thinks that players shouldn’t pay anything for their ice hockey. They could have at least been subtle about it and gone to different places for the different things.
Larry’s obviously more of an expert in funding stuff than I am, but I think those are going to flop. It’s a real rough money-grab approach in my opinion. They’ll get some funding for one or two teams, so the juniors or peewees are going to get free practises, and we’ll get no coach.
KyleMemberYes, Ryan and I would really appreciate people to look at this, if there are any changes to be made, then we’d like to do it before the next DIHL, so everything is clear.
We should be upfront about it and say that what we are pushing the Dunedin Ice Hockey Association towards, is more formality and structure and rules about how it runs its competitions. This isn’t just a rulebook for the DIHL, it’s also a rulebook for all competitions that are run in Dunedin that aren’t part of some outside body (Southern Ice Hockey League, NZ Ice Hockey League, High Schools competitions). So it includes not only the DIHL, but also any potential contact leagues, future A grade leagues outside of the DIHL, any future beginners league, intra-club leagues, etc. The informality that we’ve had previously has been kinda nice, but as we try and get more serious about our hockey, we really need rules to back that up. Hopefully we’ve left enough flexibility in the rules so that if people want to run a more informal competition then they can do so, and still use these rules.
Ryan and I actually wrote this some months ago, before we then went ahead and largely applied it to the DIHL. I should highlight some rules which I think are a little controversial, and welcome feedback on them. As Ryan says, we can change this at a future committee meeting (or indeed, someone else could got to the committee with changes and push them through even if we were opposed to it, assuming the committee votes the other person’s way), so this isn’t set in stone, but once a league starts we’re not then going to want to find out that everyone thinks it’s unworkable. It’s largely what Ryan and I have agreed on, and now the committee has agreed, it’d be good to get more input from players so we all reach a moderately happy compromise.
As an overall statement, the key from my point of view to the rulebook, is the event notice. Each league or competition issues an event notice, which details what rules, the cost, the times and dates, etc, that the league will operate under. This allows the leagues to be flexible within various constraints set in the rulebook. Every league must have an event notice, it must be available to everyone, and it must have certain things in it.
The rulebook largely follows IIHF rules (these are much more accessible than NZIHF rules, which I’ve never seen). In terms of playing rules, there’s standard contact rules, standard non-checking rules, and a kinda beginners/B grade rules, which disallows slap shots.
The major differences to the rules are in equipment. There’s the option of toning down the equipment for a beginners grade (non-ice hockey elbow, shin pads etc). Helmets, mouthguards, etc follow the IIHF rules, including the requirement for players over 18 to wear a visor. As a note, there’s no age over which a player doesn’t have to wear a visor. In the IIHF rules a player born 1974 or before doesn’t have to wear a visor. We don’t have this rule, partially because Ryan and I think it’s a stupid rule, but partially because it wasn’t until after we’d written this that it was confirmed to us that it existed in the NZIHF rulebook. If players who are… over 31? want this rule changed (Steve, Phil, Graham, Phil, Adrian, Andre, Mike?) well, let us know.
The grading, draft pool is a little complex. However, like we did in the B grade, not every competition needs to be graded. The event notice just needs to say ‘ungraded league’, and you can use another means to throw teams together. You can see that we’re trying to encourage people to form their own teams, and keep them together through several competitions. The league committee who runs the league has the ultimate power over teams to rejig them to make the competition work and be fair.
The other thing I’d highlight is section 14 – discipline. This was largely written by me, and I come from an inline hockey background, where they have a disciplinary policy, hearings, and players who engage in fights etc, get banned for a number of games – depending on the severity of the offense, injuries caused etc. It’s been a disappointment that ice hockey doesn’t have a culture of doing this, and it’s really an attempt to back up what referees can do on the ice, by taking the really serious offenses to a hearing process and actually having some serious repercussions against players who really cross the line. Part of the idea is that players can start to build up an official record of this sort of stuff, so if they get in a fight and serve a 2 game penalty for example, and then come back a month later for the same thing, they might get a more serious penalty – 3 or 4 games.
The other thing is that it provides players with the opportunity to defend themselves, rather than just take what the referee says and lump it. Witnesses etc can be called, and a player could get off.
As this rulebook gets settled down, we’d hope to make it available to managers and players who are organising teams, either in its full form, or maybe just in a couple of pages of ‘things to be wary of’ so things are clear. Just stuff like “I’m short a player, can I bring XXXX in to play for my team tonight?” and “what do my players need to wear?” etc.
Anyway, we’ve had lots of good feedback on the DIHL so far, so hopefully there’s some more on this as well.
Kyle

Ryan,[/quote:1wcnbxuw]
Once they started having a question and answer session about Queensland Ice Hockey, I just about hit someone! I almost regretted us bringing up the security, because all that needed to be done was the association to ask the rink to do something, not have a half hour discussion on it.
And it was good that the rulebook got passed. Why they did it without actually looking at it, I have no idea!
