As expected, 3 on 3 is pretty tiring!

Good to have some more people come along – Phil’s got an interesting thing going here, but we really needed two or three more subs – I was pretty knackered after 3 periods of chasing Simon Christos around.

How does this work Ryan? We have to create our own albums?

Phil will be accepting people signing up all the time – either for the whole league, or as casual players who just want to play for one night.

He had 23 at the end of last night, but some weren’t able to play all the games, so he’s definitely looking for more.

Perhaps, but sometimes that person can’t do it for whatever reason, ie: your missus popping a kid out. I wouldn’t approve of any old person having access, but the likes of Joyce may have a use for it, she is the DIHA secretary after all, but she’s not the right person for the job of looking after it. Access for her would be appropriate though IMO.

I had a chat with a friend of mine (hockey player from Vancouver actually). He’s an expert in web data storage (I didn’t know this till I posed the question above to him actually!). He said that it’s completely insecure and a big risk. He mentioned using a .htaccess file, I have no idea what that is but I’ll do some more info hunting and see what I can sort out. Putting peoples personal info. online isn’t a particularly good way to make friends and also illegal, so I’m keen to do this properly or not at all.[/quote:2wi49jaw]

Yeah I’m not proposing banning anyone else doing it in emergencies. But having one person in charge of adding people, and sending it out, would mean that there was less chance of confusion between those two tasks. All normal emails should be done by them, as they know who should get the emails, and whether the address book is up to date.

I did set up an htaccess file many years ago as a test (I vaguely remember), and yes, that probably would be a sensible solution.

From memory it’s just a couple of text files. If you didn’t change the passwords often, then you wouldn’t need to build in all the functionality around that, you could just alter the file and upload it again.

No idea. That hadn’t occured to me. My address has been active for months and I haven’t gotten any spam from it. Admittedly I didn’t post it on the web till about a month ago so maybe it’ll bite me on the arse shortly. Hopefully not. I assume there’s some sort of junk mail filter in place, ProSouth offers every other service under the sun so I’m assuming this is one of them. ProSouth don’t actually tell me what services they offer until I ask them which is weird, you’d think they’d have a list of everything they offer for their customers to see, but no! Strange company.

I could place a form on the website so that if anyone needed to contact us they could use that instead. It would re-direct all messages to the email inbox. Atleast then the address wouldn’t be plastered all over the web.

    Ryan,[/quote:2wi49jaw]

If it’s a mailto form, which are the easiest ones, then the spam harvesters pick them up in a second, because the email address is in the html. You’d need a way which prevented the harvesters picking up the address. The main way I’d think of doing this would be a cgi to parse the form and put in the email address. That’s stepping it up a big though.

I think the other ‘policy’ of sorts would be that one person does the emails at one time. That way, as long as that person has an uptodate contact list, we’re fine. Any additions need to go to that person.

If another person takes over contacting people, then they get that contact list transferred. It would make sense to me for the person that adds people to a register of players – draft lists, team lists etc, to also keep the ldif file up to date, and do all the contacting.

I’m going to try and work on a list of ‘not too serious’ job descriptions for next year. The three things that team managers do, the things the dihl head referee does, the things that the dihl chairperson does, the dihl secretary etc. It’ll be good as we’re roping these people in to make it clear what’s expected of them.

In terms of uploading the file, it’s not secure at all, but I suspect you’ve fudged it enough for it to work. The only people who know where the file is, are people you give the address to, people who can access this forum, people who run the server, and the server itself.

As long as no one on that list link to it in a public place that google can get to (google can’t get to this forum) you should be safe. The thing I’d be wary of is any search facility on the server or on the web site which doesn’t use an outside search source. Any search which is run by the actual server will be able to find that file in a second.

Having said that, the impacts of having everyone’s email addresses added to a spam harvester is kinda high, and I’d rather go the method of having one person have the master list, and email it around people when it’s updated. Some smart file naming using versions numbers or dates would avoid the problem.

A question about these dunedinicehockey.hellyer.kiwi email addresses. Do they have a spam and virus filter on the server side? Because they’re going to be useless within a couple of months if they don’t.

    Wow, I got 3246. I win!

Yes I agree that our current system, or lack of it, runs the risk of having out of date files etc.

I wouldn’t use an excel spreadsheet though, I’d use an address book format which can be transferred between machines and software. That way we can not only have lists of the current X teams in the current competition, but we can also have fuller lists of ‘all ice hockey’ and so forth for advertising upcoming competitions etc.

An address book could include physical addresses, phone numbers, and probably use extra fields for some other stuff – grades etc.

sweet, sounds like you’ve got it covered.

I’m going to take that dihl email address home and set it up on my computer and try and set up some address books. should make the whole email thing a crapload easier if we can run it through eudora.

I would suggest fill in the form and send it to him, or at least send as much of the details as you can.

He’ll be trying to put together teams on Monday night, and the last thing you want is an email from someone you don’t know saying they want to play, and that’s it. He’ll be trying to make even teams, and he might need to phone people, etc.

I would presume that Phil isn’t going to be too hard on that age rule either. There’s a bunch of 15 year olds who played in the DIHL, and if they’re a reasonable player then they should see about registering as well.

Going to have to see if I can rearrange my week so that I’m free on Wednesdays.

No, not planning to help run it. I’ll talk to Phil about it tonight and provide him with some tips, and maybe I’ll manage a team, but I’ll quite happily skip running this one.

He’s running it in two parts – before Xmas, and after Xmas, so you might be able to join up at half time.

It’s also not going to be 5 on 5. Either 4 on 4, or 3 on 3, which will be hell tiring!
