I assume it’s up to the organizers of the event to ensure that players are registered. However … if the NZIHF doesn’t provide a way to find out who’s registered then it’s unlikely to happen so I assume that’s the case here.[/quote:1iomtfy6]

It’s astounding having gone from the NZIHA (inline) to the NZIHF (ice), just how useful and competent and organised and onto it the former were in so many ways, and yet the NZIHF which is just as old, and which has a lot more history and structure to build on, I really don’t know what they do in this whole area.

I could phone up the NZIHA and find out if a player was registered, I could find every appearance they’d made in the past two years in front of a disciplinary committee anywhere in the country. I could get copies of minutes of those hearings and their rulings, and of the correspondence to the players. I could then find out if they’d served any bans and if any bans were being held over their head for ‘good behaviour’. They provided disciplinary procedures. If we were having a contentious issue they would fly down a national expert to help us out. They even got me legal advice once.

I suspect not only would the NZIHF be unable to give me this information, they just don’t collect it.

If I get round to it I might prepare some sort of proposal for the Easton Cup 2008, including recommended procedures for team sign-ups and something about this registration issue as well. Basically a plan to avoid some of the complications encountered this time round, in particular ways to reduce the workload on the organizers as personally there’s no way I’d want to run an event the way it was done this year as it would take too much time.[/quote:1iomtfy6]

Yeah, I just sent an email to some people about something, you’ll see.

I think the next thing people should start to think about is the Cadbury Cup. That didn’t seem to work out too well last year from what I heard, if some people started to work on it now then it’d be more likely to work well.

I’m surprised that the national body doesn’t have any facility for bans to be carried between regions. The inline national body operates a nationally managed discipline system. So if you get banned for games in one region, you can’t go play in another region – you have to serve your ban where ever you go.

And if he’s banned then presumably he’s not registered anywhere, so he shouldn’t be able to play in the Easton Cup at all, surely?

The whole thing was personally disappointing really. I brought my son to the rink to watch the game, and to see me play in and win a final, and he was about 5 metres away from a couple of people choosing to take up the sport of boxing at the end of a good game of hockey. That’s no way to promote hockey as a good sport.

I checked with Joyce and she said that SNC practice was on tomorrow.

The non-Beasts SNC Southern Ice Hockey team has it’s first game this coming weekend. So we’re looking to round up a team of players who aren’t playing Prems. It’s a home game, Sunday 10 am. People who sign up tomorrow night.

I know. We send him to Calgary he picks up a coach. Send him out to the bars and he finds a good goalie.

let’s send him into schools and…. er no, too dodgy.

I just realised tonight “damn, Joe’s on my team, probably not going to be any photos of me this weekend!”

Ah well, there’s always the memories I guess.

Which is why I said “trying”. And the rule about the organisers being able to reorganise teams, still applies. Joyce and Paul and I were all doing that on Thursday.

My point still is, that Gore wouldn’t need to be double-shifting on two teams, if they’d been given a few more players.

I understand that the Beasts don’t want to. But it would be nice if people in general were more willing to do so. Makes running these things a lot easier, and it’s better for the competition.

Umm, no. Tournament organisers ‘call the tune’. From the rulebook (which I presume we should be at least trying to follow):

9.11 The league committee reserves the right in to alter the player roster of any team.

Y’all just pay money in order for the privilege of playing hockey.

    And for Ryan:

9.12 Players may not be on multiple team rosters within the same league.

    Anyway.

I like the line in the DIHA rulebook which basically says “the organiser of any league or competition has the right to rearrange teams to suit the needs of the competition”. That’s what I would have been pulling out.

Seriously though, Gore could have done with some more players. They’re double-shifting and covering two teams to keep the draw working for all our benefit, and probably paying a crapload of money each to play this weekend – that’s four games on a day, and with all respect, some of those guys aren’t 20 anymore.

You guys can set your own goals for your team, obviously with the SIHL coming up you want to get better, but I’m not sure if ‘lack of game time’ is your problem – you’re entering a tough competition with quite a few players who have only been playing for a year or two, playing against people who have been playing 5+ years of hockey. Having three B grade players out there playing A grade players – it doesn’t matter how much time you play hockey together, you’re going to struggle.

And playing on the same team isn’t the only way to get used to playing together. If you switched a forward line over to another team and just ask that they get to play together, I’m sure the other team would accommodate.

Excellent! Got my new blade on the stick. If it breaks over the weekend though, I’ll be giving you a look which will look suspiciously like “what piece of rubbish blade did you sell me dude?”

OK, I’m ready to play now. Hurry up 1pm.

Things are vaguely falling into place. There looks like 8 fairly complete teams, but there’s going to be a bit of a goalie shortage heading into Saturday and Sunday – Beasts are going to be without a goalie, and it’s possible one of the gore teams might have no goalie at all. I’m sure by swapping around it can all be managed.

Anyone who wants to play should turn up at 1pm tomorrow and talk to Joyce. There’s some teams which are just 2 bare lines, so there’s room for more players.

Poor Joyce! She’s going to need a bottle of wine by the end of this weekend I think.

She’s switching back to a 8 team draw, and we’re now rounding up extras and pinching from other teams to get full numbers in all 8 teams (both Gore teams are short as well). We’re on the lookout for a goalie for this last team. If it comes down to it, we’ll borrow goalies from the other teams and just have anyone play in goal for them, but it’d be preferrable if they had their own one.

Anyone has a goalie lying around, please make contact asap. Any players who want to play for a team (looks like it’ll be pretty good actually) on Friday afternoon, Saturday and Sunday morning post here or contact me or Joyce asap.

Joyce hasn’t done it officially, but I would say by the end of tonight the draw will be back to what is on the web site with 8 teams, but with Dunedin Ducks in place of Aardwolfs.

That is the track Joyce is back on now. Just need to find another goalie, or have other goalies cover the 4th teams games.

Sweet! We’re going to have to move you into the rink Joe so you can take hundreds of photos of us all.

I always look so ungainly playing hockey. My body is designed more for basketball than ice hockey. And I have to get gear so big to get it long enough. And my skating style isn’t exactly technically brilliant. Other than that, I look like a pro <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/smiley.gif" alt=":)” title=”Smiley” />

Shame you didn’t take the shot a second earlier though. You would have seen Mr Jack Li floundering around as I intercepted the pass to him and zoomed right by him. He was still trying to finish a wee argument I’d started with him 10 seconds earlier about how when he lifts his stick up to his waist it really is a slapshot.
