[/quote:r1wrgm5a]Oooh, almost perfect pick on the score, except for that damn empty net goal my team scored. 4-2 to Bullfrogs. Kemp gets three, Gilchrist gets the first one for the Frogs. James Van Leeuwen knocks up four assists, but then again, he never left the ice, so fair enough. Smith and Parr net for Sharks. Had to guilt my team into winning as an early birthday present for me.

My pick – I’m picking it’ll be an overtime victory, 2-2 at the end of ordinary time, with it to go to golden goal, Phantoms to take it, manager King to get the winner.Actually, after in depth and careful consideration, I’m going to reverse that last one, pink laces or not! Just for Jono really.
Johnnies to get the game winner in overtime. I’m picking Mannerswood to get the game winning goal.
[/quote:r1wrgm5a]Damn, should have stuck with my original pick. 4-2 to Phantoms, with another empty net goal – to King. Christos gets another miracle goal on Schuck, shooting from behind the goal line and somehow finding an invisible hole in the pads. Joe Sales gets the game winner with a big point shot. Sinclair gets a double in the first period for Johnnies, but they just didn’t get enough offense – only eight shots all game, tough to win games like that.
Well that’s the end. All the excitement, thanks to the referees and the scorers and everyone else who helped out. Congratulations to the Phantoms, who are probably just leaving KFC as we speak. DIHL A grade champions for the second year in a row, the beginnings of a dynasty.
There’s no more DIHL hockey for now, but if someone gets off their butts and organises it, it’d be good if there were an A grade competition starting in July when the students get back. Anyone? Hopefully the DIHL will return in September – again, if someone steps up and organises it all.
Cheers everyone!
KyleMemberI wasn’t at the meeting, but I would have thought that the time has passed for suggesting new names.
The list of colour schemes must be shorter than all those question marks. We’re only choosing between three or four right? We can cross all the NZIHL and SIHL colour schemes off the list to start with.
KyleMemberI presume you have tops on the list.
Also merchandising – caps, sweatshirts, bag (normal and hockey), bumper stickers.
If she wants to think in different shapes and media, then branded hockey sticks – I’ve seen a club do this once, it was kinda cool.
Car signage.
And mockups of newspaper adverts advertising Premiere/NZIHL games.
KyleMemberDammit.
Accidentally clicked on international news page and saw the result of today’s Stanley Cup game. I was hoping to download that and watch it tomorrow night, without knowing the result.

[/quote:1ybp9mlm]You guys have a switch? No wonder Bullfrogs haven’t done so well this season – no one told us there was a switch!
At least now I know what you’re all giggling about in the changing rooms. Checking each other out, looking for the switch.
KyleMemberSee, you made the fatal error of assuming my picks are based on close attention to the teams, where people are playing, the spelling of names and whatnot.
As compared to the reality, which is “making up some rubbish for everyone’s entertainment”. If I got half your D lineup right in names, then that’s probably about as good as my picks ever get <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/smiley.gif" alt="” title=”Smiley” />
KyleMemberI’m just guessing that Ben is who you’ll push back tonight, without Steve there.
He played D for the Phantoms earlier this year anyway.
KyleMemberFor those of us who weren’t there, how about a rundown on what was decided?

The idea that you have to get the permission of the person in the photo is actually a misnomer.
The examples kyle gave are actually examples of rights protected by the tort of passing off, and is unrelated to the fact that a person is in a photo, it has to do with implying a business connection which does not, in fact, exist.
Basically, if Joe says you can use the photos, you can use the photos.
[/quote:32zchmq6]It’s not a question of copyright, it’s a question of privacy (though taking a photo doesn’t give you copyright of the contents of the photo. Copyright is retained by the creators of content, and the owners of content, it’s why you can’t take a photo of an artwork and then go reprint it). To quote the assistant privacy commissioner (legal):
[quote:32zchmq6]It is not particularly good practice to take photographs of a person without their consent, at least where obtaining consent for use of the photograph is practicable. There are ways of informing the public that photography is occurring, even in public places (see our case note from March 2006 on photography in a shopping mall). We use complaints such as this to assist photographers and others to better understand their responsibilities, and reduce their risks in future. However, we cannot find a breach of a principle unless the person is actually identifiable.[/quote:32zchmq6]
The note on the shopping mall relates to a similar situation, where a shop took photos of a shopper and then used them for advertising. The Privacy Commissioner found that it was a breach of the shopper’s privacy (principle 3), but that he had not been adversely affected by the breach (a common result from complaints to the commissioner, the Privacy Act is a crappy piece of legislation).

As far as I know it isn’t necessary to get permission from anyone regardless of age as long as they’re in a public place – sports venues generally count as public places. Our laws are definitely different from those of the USA in regards to this type of thing.
[/quote:2l55wo70]Not for private purposes. If it was the ODT printing Joe’s photos, then they’d just need the photographer’s permission (but they’d get implicit permission from the players by asking them their names). But if it’s for private business purposes, then any people clearly identifiable need to give permission. People have rights over their image and its use, and those rights aren’t given away for private commercial purposes without explicit permission. Professional players all have to sign things about use of their image as part of sporting contacts.
There are even limits about use of images in public places for private purposes. Just because you’re in a public area doesn’t mean that any company can take a photo of you and use it for their commercial gain. Otherwise everyone would be out with a camera trying to take photos of movie stars and then using them in adverts for their products without the person’s permisison.

KyleMemberOooh the big final. Tomorrow night. Let’s start by looking back a bit over the team’s seasons.
Bullfrogs. After a good start, with a win over the Sharks, and a draw with the Phantoms, the Bullfrogs have slumped to being the team that almost was. Two close losses to Jonnies, and similar losses to Phantoms and Sharks in the run home have seen Bullfrogs finish last. A short lineup, and the loss of quality defenseman Andrew Kibbelwhite after the first round really hurt the team. Last game they were either screening the goalie, or letting the Phantoms players through, something they’ll want to sort out tomorrow night.
Sharks. This team kicked through fairly well after a bad start to the season, and played probably the best game of the competition when they got over the Phantoms 4-3 in a real thriller. They weren’t quite able to do it last week against Johnnies so they’re playing off against Bullfrogs. Inconsistency cost them – at times they were great, but at other times, it just wasn’t there, and they weren’t able to match it against Johnnies when it counted.
John McGlashan OB. Great to see this team in the competition, and well done to Johnnies and John Bradfield for pushing hockey up there on the hill and stretching out to another team. After a first week shocker they got their lineup sorted, and despite scrabbling around for goalies every week, they’ve played well out on the ice and finished up convincing second place. Solid defense has really helped them out – Jackson, Sinclair, Weir, Stevenson – that’s a good D lineup.
Phantoms. Form team of the competition, Phantoms have played short all DIHL, but have largely kept on winning. A single draw against Bullfrogs, and a close loss to Sharks have been their only slipups, otherwise they’ve been strong throughout, and plenty of talent to put the puck in the back of the net. They’ll be fired up for a big final.
OK, you’re all here so you can harass me at the end of Tuesday when I make the picks wrong, so let’s get straight onto it. First up, Bullfrogs vs Sharks. The teams split these games in the round-robin, so no help there. Sharks have the numbers, but Bullfrogs have come awfully close a number of games, and I’ve just got the feeling that they’re just waiting to get it together before finally getting over the line (feeling = hope!). I’m picking the game to be close, Bullfrogs to take it 3-2 near the end of the game.
And the big final. Phantoms take on Johnnies OB. First up, I understand both Jenel Bode and Steve Jackson won’t be there for the OB, but they’re calling in wily Larry Wheeler to play in place, and that their goalie is going to be big Toby Schuck, who saw them through against the Sharks earlier with a big shutout. So I figure that’s about even in terms of swapsidaisy. Phantoms are going to have their normal short lineup as far as I know. Key for Johnnies – I think Phantoms will get tried, so if they work hard, dump and chase, and make the Phantoms skate, then they’ll fall off in the third period. That’s when Sharks beat them, and that’s probably the weakness – just not enough players. Key for Phantoms – some of that individual brilliance that saw a couple of great goals last week against the Bullfrogs. If they’re two or more up going into the last period, they should get through on the hype of the final. My pick – I’m picking it’ll be an overtime victory, 2-2 at the end of ordinary time, with it to go to golden goal, Phantoms to take it, manager King to get the winner.
KyleMemberOK, we have (more) updated statistics. These cover B grade to the end of the round robin competition, but are a little dated on the A grade (only first 3 rounds). We’ll tidy up the end of the stats after the A grade final tomorrow night.
Thanks to Aaron for compiling these.

KyleMemberWell I think if you’re going to steal Joe’s photos, then your credit should link to his site at the least <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/smiley.gif" alt="” title=”Smiley” /> I also wonder if anyone thought to get permission to use the photos of the kids for Jenel’s business.
Unless Jenel wants it, I’d take out the guestbook. I’ve seen people use these for personal sites with some success, but for a business site? I’d move the cv to a different page. And I’d add more information about what she’s offering – powerskating, hockey training for kids to prem level players, including all aspects of play. Those are the search terms she’ll be looking to turn up on.
The image of Jenel on the front page isn’t showing.
And the title at the top of the pages. You must be able to come up with something better than that? And the name in the title ‘fresh edge hockey’ doesn’t match what you call it in the first sentence ‘fresh edige ice hockey’.
