    Bizarre.

I can’t think of anything top secret in the minutes.

The other thing is, it’ll have to switch back to Saturday at some point in the future, as Sunday is going to be swallowed up by organised hockey again – once the DIHL starts again, or something else. There are simply no other nights available for organised hockey when high schools is on.

Saturday night is available most nights throughout the year, and it might be better not to keep swapping it back and forth between the two.

PS: Graham, I agree that naming a team without colours is ass about faced. Colours are an integral part of the concept. But others don’t seem to agree.

I would imagine in some instances they would be integral, but in others, they wouldn’t. You can certainly retain a brand, but change colours. We wouldn’t want to do that, but it proves that colours aren’t necessarily integral.

I agree that jumping straight on the name, like Graham said isn’t the best way to do things (see my original post on this topic some time ago), but I suspect we’ve moved along, and not having been to the committee meetings we can’t really complain too much <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/smiley.gif" alt=":)” title=”Smiley” />

Where it says ’email us’ who is us? What address should it be sent back to? Who’s compiling these email responses into something sensible?

Ryan Wick did some good layouts of tops. They should be mentioned explicitly I think – those lists of three colours don’t really have much meaning, but the images do.

It really needs a deadline for feedback. It says the decision will be made in the next two weeks, but we really should have a date whereby people need to get back to the association for their opinion to be considered.

If you’re restarting it remember that you need a game official. The club decided earlier this year that there should always be a coach or referee at all sessions, to ensure that people have safe gear (they don’t need to necessarily referee any resulting game, but they have the authority to order people off the ice).

Yeah, good idea about inviting students from schools to the launch game. Be nice to see the Prems out there playing in front of a big crowd, good way to launch the new image.

That’s seals/sealions, not sealers. No one’s yet suggested calling the team the seals or the sealions.

Sealers also doesn’t lend itself to a good logo – sealers were dirty sailors typically abandoned at the end of the world for months who went around clubbing baby seals. There’s nothing in that image which says sports logo to me.

Anyway, there’s no real strong connection between Dunedin and sealers. There was no settlement here when sealing was happening (there was with the miners some sixty years later, they all landed in Dunedin, early Dunedin was built on gold mining) for them to come here, and the seals were largely sourced from elsewhere.

The obvious comparison is with the New England/Hartford Whalers – now Carolina Hurricanes. New England has a history of whaling and people who settled and founded parts of New England were whalers. Dunedin doesn’t have a history of sealing, and there’s only a very fragile link between the descendants of the few sealers who stayed here, and the people currently here.

I’m not sure if penguins have a guilty past, unless you count eating fish for dinner guilty! I have no idea how you’d assign morality to thunder, which is really just a sound.

I really don’t like the name sealers. Sealing was an industry which just about wiped out the creatures around New Zealand. There used to be hundreds of thousands of seals around NZ, now there’s only a small percentage of that. In order to get the seal pelts, they used to smack them over the head with a club, it was rather brutal.

While some sealers ended up settling in NZ, they weren’t really settlers. They were here very early in the piece, before there were any true settlements here, and mostly went back overseas with their catch. Only a few married with local Maori and settled. Most of the sealing was done by sailors who got dropped off here for a year, and then their ship picked them up on the return voyage. They were also often Australians!

It’s not really related to Dunedin very much – there weren’t a lot of seals around this area, and Dunedin was still half a century in the future. They tended to be on the Southland coast, the Sounds, and offshore islands.

While that’s all history, it also doesn’t really link with the strong natural tourist industry we have here in Dunedin, and it has very violent associations.

No it’s not on at present.

It got cancelled once the DIHL got going, and someone would need to front up and make it happen for it to start again.

    I don’t believe so.

There’s space for this to happen on the weekend, but someone would need to take the responsibility for organising it.

He’s also a something or other dan black belt in karate.

I’ve never seen anyone get pushy with him on the ice hockey rink, but I’m not sure I’d recommend it, no matter what masters age grade he is.

    Joe makes some good points.

I’m of the opinion that there should be a committee section of the site – this should have the constitution, minutes of meetings, list of committee members, etc.

Maybe a page could go there of ‘relevant links for current committee discussion’?

Same with Colours, any colour in the world is pretty much open, due to the fact if we get light and dark set of jerseys than we will never clash.

Not if we want it to be open for NZIHL teams. Surely one of the things that we should do with anything we come up with is take it to the NZIHL and say ‘would this be ok for a future team?’. There’s no point taking tops that clash with one of the four existing teams. They’ll just say no. I can’t imagine any of the NZIHL teams have alternative tops, because they only play three other teams. They’ve arranged the colours so they don’t need alternative tops.

The same thing goes for SIHL teams. Most players are only going to own one top, the primary top. The club might have a couple of sets of alternative tops, but we don’t want to bring them out every time we play Gore. We want to only bring them out when we have a visiting team or we’re on tour or something.
