I didn’t tend to have problems booking ice time myself, I just ran it past Joyce first.

    OK.

We’re still short on A graders, so there’s still openings for skaters.

For ice time you need to actually see Neil write it in the book. We’ve always had problems before with faxes, emails etc, and then you turn up and they’ve moved us around and never told us.

As for when to start, I don’t know when the high schools competition finishes, but I wouldn’t start anything until after that. That’s probably mid-August. Then there’s the SI high schools, and two weekends of nationals, so first Tuesday and Wednesday in September is when I would think about starting. Maybe a week later. Depends how many weeks you’re aiming for, you want to avoid going into November because uni students start to leave.

And high school holidays. I’ve always put no games on during those times.

I can’t imagine they’d charge us to register a game. The NZIHA never did this – it was just part of the service they provided to clubs. If there was a charge then it would encourage clubs not to register games, which is precisely what they don’t want to happen.

The reason to register the game is that then penalties from the game can carry over to other associations. So if a player from Chch comes down here and is a complete goon, and we apply a ban, that ban follows them back to Christchurch. You could also hope that the NZIHF would get more respect for Dunedin and what we do, if they knew more of what we did – and registering our games with them is one way to do that.

Having complained about a non-eligible player playing in the Easton Cup, because we didn’t go through the NZIHF and use the process they’ve apparently set up, it would seem bizarre for us to now diss the system that we ignored last time, when we still don’t know exactly how it works, and when the same system has just given us the information of three banned players, one of whom was going to come.

It would make more sense to find out the answers to our questions, and if it doesn’t cost us anything, then there’s no loss in registering the game. After all, Jerome has recommended it to us, and he’s been helpful so far.

    Well who knows.

I had no awareness that the NZIHF took any interest in anything at the local level. If they do, and can help us out, then that’s good.

But we still need to know how to register a game with them.

Register this game or games with the NZIHF through the local association and you should have no problems.

I wonder if the local association means Dunedin, or if it means SIHL. Because I’d have no idea how you’d register a game with the NZIHF. I wonder if Joyce or Jackie do?

I was wondering about these things as well. It’d be tricky to find a place where the public could see it, but you could still make it safe to shoot pucks at a net – you’d need a big wall behind it or netting, and no windows. The only places in town I could think of like that are down alleyways and no good at all for getting people watching.

I know skating is banned on George Street, so we probably should talk to the DCC before we go putting skates on. But if that doesn’t work, we could put all the gear on and go in shoes handing out leaflets. Worth doing for a lunch time either way.

Schools is really what we should be targetting. Standing outside high schools and intermediate schools when they finish in gear and handing out leaflets – that’d drag them in, and wearing skates wouldn’t be banned around high schools.

Who’s responsible for the advertising for Cadbury Cup. Deanna has done it previously – is she in charge this time?

That’s no good. Cadbury Cup is an opportunity for us to promote our sport to a big crowd and see the prems play a good game of hockey and show off their talents. Mark Hareb and I were talking about we should promote an ‘open day’ for beginners there – give everyone a leaflet for a cheap beginners session.

Last thing we want is someone coming down who’s just going to play like a thug, that’ll turn people off if anyone starts doing stupid stuff on the ice like he was doing in the Easton Cup.

The other thing I found with a place I used to work at, is that quality of image is quite important – we had trouble identifying a guy who’d trashed some stuff outside our workplace because it was dark and you couldn’t see him well and the camera was up high and covering an area so he was small in the photo.

We were able to make some progress with the stuff that was stolen last year (unfortunately not very much) because we got given a good quality image of a person in possession of the stolen goods. A little bit more investment in the camera side of things would be worth it.

I would have thought that if there was one place that you wanted to have a security camera, it’d be covering the front door entrance area. That way you could know everyone who went in and out of the building.

And having seen a pretty horrendous action between two kids at peewees practice tonight, it’d be nice to have video footage of the main rink at least – for a number of reasons, including for the use of referees, coaches and having footage of games. It’s not like the video needs to be stored forever, you could store them for a couple of days and then they just get automatically overwritten if no one needs them. And if anyone such as Hans needs to see the rink from somewhere else, the maching hosting could just send a frame rather than video.

Wouldn’t a security camera at the entrance of the Changing rooms, be good to check for theft….

I mean ideally you would want one inside the changing rooms, to check for theft, but that may problems associated with it, ie privacy when changing etc

As much as I’d love to do something about the security issues, this won’t help I don’t think. Most of the theft that we have any idea who did it, it’s been players turning up for their games. Unless they walk out waving the stolen goods at the camera, all it’s going to show is players going in and out of the changing room when they’re playing games and then going home with their bags.
