Given that a bunch of us spent time earlier this year cursing the Southern Stampede coach for, what looked like favouring ‘local’ (Queenstown) players over ‘not local’ (not Queenstown) players, I really hope not.

If it was up to me (and it clearly won’t be), the conditions for being part of the squad and out on the ice would be 1. turning up when required and training hard, 2. being a good player and showing that out on the ice, and 3. fitting in to the squad and being a good team member. Other than that, what does it matter where a player goes to at the end of practice – Dunedin, Gore, Christchurch etc?

I’ve never been involved with running a NZIHL team, so I’m just guessing here.

But I suspect the DIHA, or whoever ends up running the team, through the coaches and managers, if it does get a team, will decide on a process for selecting players, who will be invited etc. I’m not sure it’s really appropriate for other players to comment on whether people won’t be welcome in any possible team. I can’t imagine anyone is going to be impressed if other players start deterring quality potential players without any authority to do so.

I think there’s a meeting this coming weekend which is the crucial one.

No, I’m serious. I don’t consider the latest IPod news, I consider that advertising and they don’t release new products every day, if they did they’d be over run with too much stuff on their site and it would be confusing as hell.
    [/quote:1maojsji]

When you’re selling stuff, new products are news, as are special deals. People certainly consider that news when they’re buying it. As much as ‘XXX practice is cancelled is news’ or ‘Beasts won a game of ice hockey’ is news.

That first bit – one of about five decent saves Jamie made on me during the game. I started the game with the idea that it’d be nice to keep it close. Couldn’t score a goal all game!

Nice site. Not much use for news though.
    [/quote:32e2vpjr]

You’re kidding right? I can go to the apple.com front page and almost all I see is news. There’s a big add in the middle for their ipod nano. There’s four smaller images which are ads further down. And in between there’s a how news headline flicker thing. That’s about a dozen news stories. The only thing that isn’t ‘news’ is the top and bottom menus.

Eighthly, we don’t need news posts going back two weeks. Today, yesterday and the day before is easily enough for me.[/quote:32e2vpjr]

I think I need a highlighted news section or some such thing. As some news items need to stay for a few weeks to make sure people see them (most people don’t check the site more than once a week).
    [/quote:32e2vpjr]

I think a lot more people check the forum daily, than they do the main web page, which might indicate that the way news is presented on the main page isn’t working, or the forum way works better, or there’s no need for both etc.

Personally I check the web page daily, but it’s static, and the forum is dynamic. If I knew that everything was posted to the forum then I wouldn’t go to the web page at all, because the forum tells me what I haven’t read already. The web site doesn’t do that with news.

The lack of images is a problem, but not so bad. You could use generic photos for a lot of things.  people in the club would recognise that that photos for the dihl is the same photo you used for the upcoming juniors tournament, but people outside wouldn’t. And it’s really outsiders that we want to make the website attractive and more interesting, insiders want functionality largely. Remember that Joe took about 5000 photos while he was here, and he’s given us permission to use them. They’re not all available at present, but enough are to start.

None of the sites you’re using as your inspiration are sport/club sites. Or indeed have anything to do with sports. Why are you using sites that are in a totally different marketplace? We’re competing with other sports, not web design sites, food sites, etc.

And half of them look like what they are, which is wordpress sites with different headers and colour schemes.

Surely a site design should incorporate some brand energy? Why would you take a web about a fast, energetic, aggressive sport, and inspire your design on texty blog sites with very few images?

I keep coming back to white space. The page uses the whole space across the browser, and I think it needs breaking up.

You talk about 2 columns, why not one column but restrict the width?

The other thing is photos on the front page. Hockey is a very photographic sport, and we had a professional photographer here for most of the season. Why not take advantage of it? Photos break up text, provide the action and excitement that is inherent in the sport, colour etc.

What about a ‘most recent games’ box. A photo on top with a sentence story below. With games from the DIHL. nhl.com has a really good box which slides along through about 5 stories I think.

The news items are still too long. I think the purpose of the news should be to get people interacting with the site. That means clicking. If you take a news story:

    John McGlashan default
Posted by Ryan on October 3rd, 2007

Correction: John McGlashan defaulted their game against Kings in Round Four of the Dunedin Ice Hockey League (DIHL) B-grade due to using illegal players. This hasn’t effected the final result as they lost anyway, but the final score recorded in the statistics for the game will be 5-0 to Kings.

Well that’s done, there’s no more. Why not instead have:

John McGlashan defaulted their game against Kings in Round Four of the Dunedin Ice Hockey League (DIHL) [more]

If the link takes them to a place where there’s that story, and the other games etc… you’re getting value out of your news. It’s tangling up your user and getting them interacting with the site and hopefully having followup clicks rather than just reading and leaving.

I’d also break news up. News I think really should be for stuff that has happened. Some of this stuff is ‘coming up’, and that should be separated out – push it out into that white space in a new section.

All the NHL team sites seem to be all the same, so there’s not much inspiration to be taken from there. http://www.allblacks.com/ is a good site though. Their news thing is well done though – 5 stories in one box, with links down below so you can view any of the 5, but it scrolls through them. They use ‘white’ space on the sides so that the site doesn’t overwhelm you. Boxes down the middle to provide structure, as the boxes go down they’re of less importance.

Hockey canada is nice. http://www.hockeycanada.ca/. See how they’ve used images to provide the link to upcoming competitions rather than just text. It’s image heavy, but we wouldn’t need that much.

I have no interest in soccer, but this is a good site:

    http://www.manutd.com/.

I like how the exciting hyped up video comes on, though that makes it un-work-safe for some.

I know you’ll want to wait for branding stuff before doing any serious redesign work of course, but there’s structural stuff that can be done.

I used email through four dihls… actually ryan did the communication for at least one dihl, and never had any problems with people not getting information. About 95% of players have email addresses, and as long as communication is done at least a day in advance people seem to get it in time.

I haven’t struck anyone in the hockey community who is completely technologically illiterate. Everyone seems to be able to receive and read email no problem, which is all that’s really required for keeping informed.

I’ve never seen any which work for NZ. Or at least, none that have worked long term. There have been services which were introduced, before adding a charge to them later on once they’ve got you hooked on it.

    Ryan,

OK. I used one a bit a few years ago, but not since.

To be honest, email is perfectly fine for contacting players, and free. Not quite as good as txt, but not so bad that it’d be worth paying $10 or something to contact everyone.

Medium isn’t the issue. There’s no system of any kind for contacting all players, Ryan tried to set one up earlier this year but gave up. Mark was then going to take it up, but it didn’t seem to go anywhere as far as I know.

So why is there no mention of my kick ass spectacular goaltending for Jonnies? And what about that kick ass play that I set up for Tom to get the goal? The goaltending was so good, that they want me to come back next week lol.

The scorebox looked at me twice when I told them I wanted goalie to have an assist. Obviously doesn’t happen to them much.

You certainly got the award for most talkative goalie _ever_. I can’t recall more than about 10 seconds where you weren’t talking to your team.

Johnnies defaulted before the game to use extra players that are not on there team list, this may explain the sudden improvement.

That’s what I thought as well, and I asked them if they were defaulting, and they said no. And then I had to get them to add the Wilson brothers to the scoresheet, and Tom plays for another team. It’s definitely a default, and should be listed as 5-0 to Kings in the results.

There were no penalties called last night in three games of hockey. Man you guys are boring.

    Ditto on the different day.

And a poll which doesn’t allow you to select 3/4 options?
