Firstly, I agree with Kyle about the upcoming/completed news split. Good idea.

    Secondly, I like the columns.

Thirdly, Kyle’s definitely right about the use of images. Photos are difficult, I know, but generic photos are still good. Also, movement is quite cool. For a very basic example, see what i did at http://www.automotiverepairs.co.nz on the sidebar – the whole Automotive Solutions group loved it, and it’s a very basic site.

Fourthly, if dunedinicehockey.hellyer.kiwi ever ends up looking anything like hockeycanada.ca I will personally castrate you. That site is sooooo 2001.

Fifthly, I find dunedinicehockey.hellyer.kiwi very very texty. I guess this is what I’ve been driving at with the whole beginners-section/make-the-text-bigger thing. There’s just too many words on the front page for anyone to navigate it.

Sixthly, no, i don’t object to “wanna”. Sorry I was unclear, I was just trying to help you locate the mis-spelt “although” by telling you the section heading.

Seventhly, to be honest, I’m not a fan of pitpass or grandprix. IMHO, a site needs to be elegant. The most elegant site on the web is probably http://www.apple.com. Hard to imitate, I know, but less text, more white, more colour are the order of the day, I think.

Eighthly, we don’t need news posts going back two weeks. Today, yesterday and the day before is easily enough for me.

    That’s all for now, i think….

Graham – just FYI, if attendance is low over the next couple of weeks it’s probably due to exams, not because of a slip in demand.

I can’t see why that would be a problem. Having someone with experience on the team will stop them getting walked over so much, which makes the competition better for everyone

    I said ‘pretty’, not ‘good’.
    ‘good’ does not equal ‘pretty’.

I’ll PM some FTP details for your own account. That way you can test out anything you want and Chris wont need to worry about another person having FTP access to the site.

    I just worry about my precious wordpress install <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/cheesy.gif" alt=":D” title=”Cheesy” />

    It’s so easy to break….

Beginner’s page, “Wanna Compete?”, Second paragraph – “Althoug”

RE: Columns. IE conditional comment and tabulate it? If they’re using IE, they deserve the tables.

Personally I would set the introductory text to about 1.4em

The software  want to use can automatically generate slideshows and embed them in a post, but ok…..

Mark, are you sure that you can be trusted with direct FTP access? <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/wink.gif" alt=";)” title=”Wink” />

There’s a link on the side for registering.

The forum will remain the same

I will be installing software for uploading photos.

In the mean time, photos can be attached and embedded into articles.

The pass it on thing is pretty unreliable, and only works for the more close-knit members of the hockey community.

You can’t use that as a system for contacting members. Last resort only.

Chris, I’m currently uploading some plugins for you to try.

The “advanced menus” one is particular useful as the default admin menu is completely shit.

“All in one SEO pack” is good at … well … SEO stuff!
    Ditto for the Sitemap generator

“Visualise advanced features” just gives access to some more of the wysywig editor functions. Once installed, you just click a button on the menu and it pops open some more helpful wysiwyg buttons.

Fair enough. I haven’t had the same success with email myself, but as a former DIHL organiser, you’d probably have a far better idea than I.

Ryan, have you thought about the addition of a “New to hockey?” section on the main page that I suggested a short while ago?

It is my experience that about 60-80% of the hockey community are completely technologically illiterate.

As a means of actually getting information to players, email pales in comparison to text.

I’ve never seen any which work for NZ. Or at least, none that have worked long term. There have been services which were introduced, before adding a charge to them later on once they’ve got you hooked on it.

    Ryan,

    Ditto.

Costs a minimum of about 13c per text. So can get a bit costly if you need to send stuff on a regular basis.

    Possible discounts for not-for-profit organizations?
